Back It Up: October 2023 Market Report

October saw many events take place to prepare the industry for long-term success as colder weather and winter approaches. Indiana adds 200 truck parking spaces at Kankakee Welcome Center to address shortages and create a safer environment. At the ports, port authorities are exploring real-time cargo tracking, with privacy concerns raised. American electric vehicle manufacturer, Rivian, plans to open Atlanta space to showcase its brand and confirms a $5 billion Georgia factory for R2 crossover production. These many advancements are encouraging for the transportation industry!

Additionally, Trucking fleets face complexities due to evolving emissions regulations in California and the need for zero-emission technology. UPS highlights renewable natural gas as a solution. CARB’s ACT rule may limit diesel truck availability, and congestion added significant costs in 2021. This congestion problem, cost the industry an enormous $94.6 billion. On a much more positive note, The Women in Motion group is expanding its memberships and resources to support female independent contractors. As the darkness roles in earlier, and we reflect on October, we are excited for what’s to come in the industry.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Max Goldman

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT—Max Goldman
PGT Services: Project and Heavy Haul Manager

The people who form the PGT Services team are crucial for our company and customer success. That is why we are committed to supporting our employees in their career development. Our workforce is made up of a team of dedicated individuals who are actively involved in ensuring smooth operation of processes with the best possible service. We strive to deliver a positive experience for both our carrier and our customers, especially with specialized project freight which requires detailed execution. Managing complex project freight effectively is a significant undertaking, yet PGT Services ensures that we have the most capable individuals managing this department with unmatched service.

We had a chat with Max Goldman, our Project and Heavy Haul Manager, to explore the importance of his role at PGT Services. During our conversation, we discussed his thoughts on the future and gathered insights from his experience in the transportation industry. Here’s what he shared.

How long have you worked for PGT Services? What role did you start out in and where are you now:
“I have worked at PGT Services for about 2.5 years now. When I first started, I was a Capacity Solutions Representative, booking shipments with drivers over the phone.”

Max has always had a passion for logistics, studying Supply Chain Management at Duquesne and immediately jumping into the industry at PGT Services at our very beginning. He started as a Capacity Solutions Representatives, originally working directly with carriers on the phone and learned the internal operations of PGT Services and the general transportation industry. He then transitioned into
helping create the project logistics team here at PGT Services where he started as project and heavy haul lead. Now, he leads the internal team Project and Heavy Haul Manager.

What is your current job description:
“I am currently the Project and Heavy Haul Manager here at PGT Services. I coordinate all Project and Heavy Haul shipments between the customer, the site: both shipping and receiving, and the drivers hauling. We pride ourselves on the communication and fluidity we serve in this department to our
customers.”

Max is directly involved with customers, operations, and overall business performance daily. He is constantly working diligently to make sure his customers are always taken care of. For instance, Max spends most of his days working in our Sewickley office, but every once in a while you can find him boots on the ground managing projects at our ports, or meeting with customers to continue building great relationships. Actually—Max was at Port of Everett last week!!

What is the most challenging part of your job:
“I love a challenge which is part of the reason I got into this industry to begin with. Not all shipments go as planned and at times the industry is unpredictable, which although frustrating– overcoming an obstacle is so worth it! I think the most challenging part of my job is the prep work behind every move, and calculating all details involved to make sure the move goes as smooth as possible. Not all shipments go as planned, which is frustrating, but overcoming the obstacle is worth it. “

Your favorite part of your job:
“I thoroughly enjoy seeing the shipment through all the way to the delivery. Coordinating and preparing as much as we do here, it is awesome to see the freight successfully be delivered and having the customer happy.”

The Transportation Industry is a complex reality. All freight has a use in the world that we live in, and it is a pleasure to be a part of the network to get that material to where it needs to go.

Our team consists of dedicated professionals who consistently deliver great service to our customers. PGT Services encourages ongoing growth and internal development by promptly identifying operational needs and establishing new positions to improve our business operations.

Back It Up: August 2023 Market Report

As August ends, we say goodbye to the summer weather and prepare for the arrival of fall, along with the bustling transportation season it brings. To end the summer, Taylor Swift’s Eras tour reportedly gifted $100,000 bonuses to approximately 50 truck drivers, totaling an impressive $5 million. In stark contrast, Hurricane Idalia, a Category 3 storm, struck Florida on August 30, causing widespread destruction along the Gulf Coast.

Experts and industry stakeholders are exploring alternatives to federal regulations favoring battery-electric trucks, with Senator Pete Ricketts supporting the Flex Fuel Fairness Act, which encourages flex fuel vehicle production alongside battery EVs. Pennsylvania is simplifying the CDL skills test, effective August 28, to enhance accessibility. Meanwhile, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expands two marine highway systems, adding 250 miles to the Ohio River system and 6,500 miles of Alaskan waterways to enhance freight shipments and supply chains.
